Jumanji: The Next Level

Friends Spencer Gilpin (Alex Wolff), Anthony "Fridge" Johnson (Ser'Darius Blain), Martha Kaply (Morgan Turner), and Bethany Walker (Madison Iseman) have graduated from high school and moved on. This is one year after the events of the previous movie. Martha has become a popular student at her college, while Fridge has been working out a lot. Bethany is traveling the world while performing community service. They plan a get-together at Nora's diner in Brantford, New Hampshire, to commemorate the holidays. Spencer has been going through a difficult time while attending college in New York. He has put his long-distance relationship with Martha on hold because he is unhappy with his menial supermarket job. His maternal grandfather Eddie (Danny ), who is recovering from hip surgery, is sharing his room when he gets home. Eddie tells his grandson that college is the best time of one's life and that things are bound to get worse as one gets older that evening as he and Spencer talk through their issues. Spencer decides to re-don the character of Dr. Smolder Bravestone from the Jumanji video game after losing hope that his life will ever get better. He locates the broken pieces of the game that he had hidden away and restores it to a barely functional state before activating it. When Spencer doesn't show up for their planned reunion the following morning, his three friends are puzzled and go to his house in search of him. They meet Eddie and his estranged friend Milo Walker (Danny Glover) there and learn that the two men were once co-owners of Nora's but had gotten into a fight after Milo decided to retire. The threesome discover the game running in his basement while looking for Spencer and hear the dreaded Jumanji drum beats. They all decide, reluctantly, to rejoin the game and save him. Things aren't exactly the same as they were the first time the teens played the game when they enter the game. Fridge now portrays Bethany's previous avatar, Professor Shelly Oberon (Jack Black), while Martha continues to portray Ruby Roundhouse (Karen Gillan). Further complicating matters, Bethany has been left behind as Eddie and Milo have been drawn into the broken game as well. They are now portraying Dr. Smolder Bravestone (Dwayne Johnson) and Franklin "Mouse" Finbar (Kevin Hart), the two remaining avatars. After Fridge loses his first life after being devoured by an anaconda, NPC leader Nigel Billingsley (Rhys Darby) flies in and gives the players their new mission: Bravestone's parents' murderer, Jurgen the Brutal (Rory McCann), has stolen a gem known as the Falcon Jewel that ensures good harvests. To win, the four explorers must reclaim the jewel and "show it to the sun," yelling out Jumanji's name. The players are attacked by a herd of ostriches in the desert after Nigel drops them there, and they barely manage to flee in a broken-down dune buggy. As soon as Milo takes too long to explain the biology of the ostriches, which leads to Eddie losing his first life when he confronts one of them, it is clear that Eddie's stubbornness and Milo's propensity for giving lengthy explanations are endangering the group. When the team arrives at a location called the Oasis, they encounter Spencer, who has changed into Ming Fleetfoot (Awkwafina), a female cat burglar. By accidentally capturing Spencer and handing him over to Jurgen the Brutal, who beheads him to death, Eddie accidentally costs Spencer his first life. Thankfully, Spencer respawns nearby. A desert fruit known as the Jumanji Berry is acquired by Fridge and Martha after they follow the hints provided, and they also find a pool of glowing green water where they can trade avatars. Eddie engages in a physical altercation with about 45 other people as Spencer and Milo look for camels for the group to ride. Switchblade, a mercenary who is Bravestone's only vulnerability, becomes interested in the battle. Each player loses a life as Switchblade uses a rocket launcher to instantly kill everyone. As the group travels on camels to their next destination, Eddie and Milo argue about Milo's decision to leave the restaurant industry, which infuriated the workaholic Eddie. When Eddie tramples Milo beneath a rock, the fight is over and Milo loses his second life. The group eventually reaches the next level, which consists of a series of movable rope bridges spanning a canyon. They quickly come across a group of enraged mandrills who pursue the players and try to push them off the bridges. Although Fridge is able to use his avatar's geometry skill to lead the group across, they are ultimately surrounded on the other side by the dangerous primates, and Martha loses her second life when she is occasionally thrown into the canyon by the mandrills. They are saved at the last second by Alex Vreeke (Colin Hanks), who Bethany has hired. While Bethany is now portraying a black horse named Cyclone, he is once more playing Jefferson "Seaplane" McDonough (Nick Jonas). They both brought winter clothing for the others to wear. When Eddie and Milo make up, Milo explains that he is dying and wants to make amends with Eddie before he passes away. Fridge informs everyone that the mismatched avatars have been a significant liability up to this point as the group gets ready to confront Jurgen at his mountain fortress. Because of his long windedness, Milo takes too long to explain the dangers that any wild animal can present to them, and because Eddie is too impulsive and hot-headed to be Bravestone, Spencer's neuroticism isn't really well suited to a thief like Ming. Shortly after, Fridge unintentionally discovers a river flowing with the eerie glowing water that he and Martha had seen at the Oasis. With the exception of Martha and Alex, all of the characters jump in, which causes Spencer, Fridge, and Bethany to revert to their original avatars, while Eddie now plays Ming and Milo now plays Cyclone. Unfortunately, Jurgen's men quickly capture the two elderly men, leaving the original team of five to rescue them. While Fridge and Bethany pretend to be the two famous brothers Jurgen is expecting, Alex infiltrates the mountain fortress and loses two of his lives to the booby traps while attempting to rescue Milo. Spencer and Martha rekindle their romance as Eddie is located and set free. While Spencer pursues Jurgen's escape, Martha fights Jurgen's thugs inside the fortress while listening to music. Spencer confronts the conqueror from his zeppelin and determines that the Jumanji Berry is the weak point in Jurgen, using it to subdue and defeat the bad guy. Milo carries Eddie to meet Spencer in the air after Cyclone is revealed to be a flying horse below. Spencer tosses the Falcon Jewel to his grandfather, who follows Nigel's instructions and points the gem at the sun. When they have completed their task, the entire team yells "Jumanji," which ends the game. When Nigel arrives to send the players home, Milo declares that he wants to continue playing. Having respect for his intentions and expressing gratitude for their friendship, Eddie bids him farewell. After Spencer thanks his friends for helping him, Fridge warns him not to do it again. Once everyone has made it back to Spencer's basement safely, Eddie changes his mind about getting older and tells Spencer that it is actually "a gift.". When Spencer and Eddie do go to Nora's, they learn that Nora Shepherd, Judy and Peter's aunt and an old friend of Eddie's, is actually the current owner of the diner. Eddie starts to smolder at her, using the lessons he learned as Bravestone to flirt with her. A repairman is called by Spencer's mother to fix the basement heater in a scene that takes place in the middle of the credits, and while there, he finds the game and its console. Spencer and his friends are startled when a herd of ostriches rushes past the diner at Nora's.
