The Batman movie explained

Halloween was celebrated by Gotham City mayor Don Mitchell Jr. is killed by a killer who goes by the moniker "The Riddler.". Along with the Gotham City Police Department (GCPD), billionaire Bruce Wayne, who has been operating as the vigilante Batman for two years, conducts investigations. The Riddler left a message for Batman, which Lieutenant James Gordon finds out, but commissioner Pete Savage chastises him for letting a vigilante into the crime scene and orders Batman to leave. After killing Savage, The Riddler leaves Batman with yet another letter. Batman and Gordon learn that the Riddler left images of Mitchell with a woman named Annika at the Iceberg Lounge, a nightclub run by mobster Carmine Falcone's lieutenant Penguin, on a thumb drive that was left in Mitchell's car. Batman confronts the Penguin, who claims ignorance but is caught by the fact that Selina Kyle, Annika's roommate and girlfriend, is a waitress there. Batman sends Selina back to the Iceberg Lounge after Annika vanishes to look for information. Batman learns from Selina that both Savage and district attorney Gil Colson were employed by Falcone. When Batman inquires about her relationship with Falcone, Selina cuts off communication. Colson is kidnapped by The Riddler, who then straps a timed collar bomb to his neck and sends him to disrupt Mitchell's funeral. When Batman arrives, the Riddler calls Colson on his phone and threatens to blow up the bomb if Colson can't solve three puzzles. Batman assists Colson in responding to the first two questions, but Colson declines to respond to the third: the identity of the informant who provided the GCPD with information that resulted in a historic drug bust that put an end to mobster Sal Maroni's operation. Colson is killed when the bomb goes off, and Batman is rendered unconscious. Following the informant to a drug transaction, Batman and Gordon determine that he might be the Penguin. They learn that many GCPD officers are still involved in Maroni's operation, which never actually came to an end. When Selina arrives to steal money, she unintentionally exposes them. Selina finds Annika's body in a car trunk as the Penguin runs away. Batman manages to apprehend the Penguin, but finds out that he was not the informant. Batman and Gordon follow the Riddler's trail to the ruins of an orphanage run by Thomas and Martha Bruce. They discover that the Riddler was a resident of the orphanage and harbors animosity toward the Waynes. After opening a letter bomb addressed to Bruce, Bruce's butler and caregiver Alfred Pennyworth is taken to the hospital. The Riddler then releases proof that Thomas, who was running for mayor when he was killed, hired Falcone to kill a journalist because he threatened to reveal embarrassing specifics about Martha's past mental illness. Bruce confronts Alfred, who confirms the claims but claims that Thomas decided to report Falcone to the police after learning of the murder; Alfred speculates that Falcone had Thomas and Martha killed to prevent this. Bruce grew up believing that his father was a morally upright man. Batman is informed by Selina that Falcone is a bad father. Because Mitchell had informed her that Falcone was the informant, she learned that Annika had been strangled and made the decision to kill Mitchell. In time to stop her, Batman and Gordon make it to the Iceberg Lounge. Selina is physically stopped from killing Falcone by Batman, who tells her that she shouldn't let Falcone ruin her future by killing him and going to jail. Falcone boasts that he is aware of all of Gotham's dark secrets and criminal dealings and that everything he knows will perish with him as Batman leads a haughty Falcone to the police. As soon as Batman takes Falcone outside to the patrol that is waiting, Riddler shoots Falcone through the window of his apartment. The Riddler is a prisoner at Arkham State Hospital and has been revealed to be forensics accountant Edward Nashton. Nashton claims that, as an abandoned orphan, he envied Bruce for receiving support following the death of his parents. He offers a partnership because he admires Batman, who gave him the idea to go after the corrupt, but Batman rejects him angrily. Batman realizes that Nashton still has a plan as he starts to rant after being rejected by his idol. A happy Nashton sings "Ave Maria," the song sung at the Mitchells' funeral, to suggest that the final step of the plan is the assassination of mayor-elect Bella Real, after realizing that Batman hasn't figured out his next move. Batman, who is unaware of this, yells, "What have you done!?". As Batman searches his apartment, a police officer unintentionally helps him by displaying a carpet-cutting tool that the Riddler had earlier used to murder the mayor or. Batman cuts open the rug of the apartment and notices that Nashton has placed car bombs throughout Gotham after realizing that this tool is another clue to deciphering the Riddler's master plan. As soon as he does this, a video of Nashton's last transmission before being apprehended and imprisoned plays online, in which he gleefully explains that he has amassed an online following that has plans to assassinate mayor-elect Bella Reál. The bombs flood the city and obliterate the breakwaters surrounding Gotham. When Nashton's supporters attempt to kill Reál inside of a shelter, Batman and Selina intervene to stop them. Batman defeats the cult while fighting them in the rafters, but the final member who was about to put him to death almost kills him. Selina shows up, saves Batman, and then gives him a kiss in appreciation for keeping her from killing Falcone. The participant, however, awakens and uses a knife to almost murder Selina. Because of his injuries, Batman is unable to move to defend Selina. He stands up, gives himself an adrenaline shot, and then he tackles the member to the ground. He brutally beats the member's face while he has him pinned down until Gordon and Selina intervene and stop him. When Gordon gets close to the participant, he rips off his mask, exposing his swollen, battered face. Who the hell are you, Gordon demands. Me? I'm retribution, the man replies. ". Batman notices a power line swinging erratically just past the crowds in the flooded water below, shooting sparks everywhere. Batman swings toward the cord and grabs hold of it using his grappling hook. His removable bat emblem is used to cut the cord once he is hanging onto it, which sends him plummeting into the water and getting shocked by electricity. From the water, Batman emerges, sets off a flare, and guides the survivors to safety. After realizing that his weapon of fear has increased the motivation of vigilantes, Batman helps with recovery efforts and makes a promise to instill hope in Gotham. Nashton is lashing out in his cell in Arkham, upset that his plan didn't work. Asking Nashton to solve a riddle, a nearby cell mate who is largely hidden by his steel cell door makes the suggestion. I am worth more the less of me you have. The reply from Nashton is, "A friend. They share a laugh. Batman refuses Selina's request to accompany him as she departs from Gotham, which she believes is hopelessly damaged. On their motorcycles, they took to the streets and began to playfully weave one another. Selina takes the right fork at the fork in the road, and Batman takes the left. She vanishes into the distance as he turns to look at himself in the mirror. He then turns to face the future.
