After Earth movie explained
In the not too distant future, a climatic catastrophe compels humanity to leave Earth and travel outside the Solar System in search of a new home. The exodus comes to an end when humanity colonizes Nova Prime, a brand-new, uninhabited world.
A thousand years later, the an alien race that sought to conquer Nova Prime, clash with The Ranger Corps, a group working to maintain peace under the command of General Cypher Raige (Will Smith). The Ursas are a race of enormous predators that hunt by "sensing" fear. Until Cypher masters the "ghosting" method of completely suppressing his fear, the Rangers battle the Ursas. He guides the Ranger Corps to victory after instructing the other Rangers in this strategy.
In the meantime, Senshi, Cypher's sister, was killed by an Ursa, and Kitai Raige, Cypher's son (Jaden Smith), accuses himself of being responsible. Because of her passing, Kitai works hard to become a Ranger like Cypher because he doesn't want to let his father down again. Due to his recklessness, Cypher rejects his application for the Ranger Corps, and he is seen as a disappointment by Cypher. In order to take Kitai on his final journey before retiring, Cypher is persuaded by Kitai's mother, Faia
Father and son begin to get along during the trip after being forced to work together for the mission. However, an asteroid shower catches their spacecraft, forcing them to crash-land on Earth, which is now a planet under Class-1 quarantine. In addition to having two broken legs, Cypher also has a damaged main emergency beacon. When the ship's tail broke off during the ascent to the surface, Cypher gave Kitai the order to find it. The backup beacon is inside, and they can use it to contact Nova Prime. In order to breathe, Kitai is given six oxygen capsules, a wrist communicator, and Cypher's Ranger weapon since human lungs can no longer withstand Earth's air. Cypher cautions him to stay away from the fauna and flora, which have changed since humans left, and to exercise caution around the planet's thermal shifts. Cypher uses the communicator to direct Kitai as he departs to locate the tail section. After defying Cypher's instructions in an attempt to flee, Kitai is swiftly attacked by enormous baboons and eventually bites by a poisonous leech. Even though Kitai administers an antidote successfully, two of his oxygen capsules are broken, and his nervous system goes into hours-long shutdown. Upon discovering his damaged capsules, Kitai lies to Cypher after barely escaping one of the planet's thermal shifts when he awakens. That evening, Kitai hears Cypher tell him a tale about being attacked by an Ursa and coming to the realization that fear is only an illusion brought on by one's thoughts of the future. As a result, he started to "ghost" himself away from the Ursas and made the decision to live rather than allow his enemies, fear and the Ursas, to determine his fate.
The next day, Kitai arrives at a mountaintop, where Cypher is informed of Kitai's broken oxygen capsules. Kitai is told to abort the mission because he won't have enough oxygen, according to the conclusion. Kitai, who thinks his father still views him as a disappointment, attributes Senshi's demise to Cypher, who was absent from Nova Prime on the day they were attacked. Kitai jumps from a mountaintop in an attempt to disprove his father, but he is captured and his forearm/wrist communicator is damaged.
Kitai becomes attached to the condor, who makes him leave when lions attack the condor's nest. He continues his journey while using a makeshift raft, and Kitai dreams about his sister. Senshi reassures him that Cypher's bitterness is simply his own rage over failing to save her. When Kitai awakens, he is startled by another thermal shift, misplaces Cypher's weapon, and comes dangerously close to dying from hypothermia. The condor thankfully saves Kitai by giving its life to save him. When Kitai reaches the tail section, he takes the emergency beacon, a second communicator, a new weapon, and more oxygen capsules. Only Cypher can hear Kitai and see him through the communicator; Kitai is unable to hear him. When Kitai learns that an Ursa was aboard the ship to teach the cadets how to "ghost" themselves, she is astounded. The remaining crew members were killed when the creature escaped during the crash. When the emergency beacon does not go off, Cypher realizes that the atmosphere is obstructing the signal and that Kitai needs to move to a higher location. Kitai travels to a nearby volcano where he can launch the beacon but is wounded and attacked by the Ursa. Kitai is able to manage his fear and "ghost" himself from the Ursa long enough to kill it with his weapon thanks to Cypher's advice to concentrate on the present rather than the end result. Following the beacon's launch by Kitai, a rescue mission to bring them back to Nova Prime is dispatched shortly after.
As Cypher heals from his wounds, Kitai is commended for his courage.
